"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" by William Butler Yeats. This quote can be applied to dementia awareness. So many persons with dementia are starting to speak up and share their life experiences. We are beginning to see progress in the removal of the stigma that has been present for all too long. There is much work that needs to be done; however, we are making progress.
I think about all of the work of Norm McNamara in the United Kingdom. He has done an incredible job of raising awareness about dementia, around the world. Many people are now involved in the United States and other parts of the world. The momentum is growing as we all seek to have a more dementia friendly world.
As more and more persons living with dementia and their care partners become actively involved in telling their story, we will reach the mountain top. Very few mountains are straight up. Many times, there are landing areas. Each time, we hit a landing area, we must recruit more persons with dementia and more care partners to move to the next level of the climb.
Let's fire up the grill and run the race to the top of the mountain. When we reach the top of the mountain, we will bask in the glory of a dementia friendly world.
